7th Annual National Homeless Persons' Memorial

  • Coos History Museum

Please join us in the Sprague Gallery on Wednesday, December 21st at 5pm for the 7th Annual National Homeless Persons' Memorial.

This memorial is an annual event commemorated in over 150 cities and counties across the United States on the first day of winter, also the longest night of the year. The community is invited to join in for a shared meal of ‘stone soup’ and fresh bread. Food will be served at 5:15pm. Candles will be lit at 5:45pm followed by a moment of silence in honor of those homeless who’ve died both in Coos County and nationwide. After a short prayer, people will have time to offer remembrances and thoughts about homelessness.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Prior to the event, warm winter wear, monetary and food donations are needed. Cash donations will help in two ways: to help provide transportation to and from the memorial for our area homeless, and to purchase food items to prepare homemade stone soup.

You can find donations jars at:

Farr’s True Value Hardware, 880 South 1 st Street, Coos Bay

So It Goes Coffee Shop, 190 Central Avenue, Coos Bay

McKay’s grocery, 149 South 7 th Street, Coos Bay

Time Bomb, 175 3 rd St, Coos Bay

Since 1990, the National Coalition for the homeless has sponsored National homeless Persons’ Memorial Day on the first day of winter to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember our homeless citizens who have paid the ultimate price for our nation’s failure to address the issue.

The memorial is sponsored by the Coos History Museum, The Devereux Center, ORCCA, Growing Through It, and including generous support of local businesses including Yellow Cab Taxi, The Tuna Guys, Farr’s True Value Hardware, Empire Bakery and others.
