Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP) in the Coos Basin with Gary Vonderohe.

The September 6th First Tuesday Talk will take place from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM both in person at the CHM and online via Zoom. Doors to the museum will open from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM for visitors to view the exhibits and visit the museum store if desired.

*Registration is offered both in person at the museum and online through this event page. Online registration will close on September 6th at 3:00 PM so please register at your earliest convenience. If you miss the registration window, you may register and purchase tickets at the door, but please check our website or call the museum to ensure spaces are still available.

Gary Vonderohe grew up in a rural community in northeastern Iowa.  After graduating college from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, he worked in fisheries program in Iowa and Yellowstone National Park before moving to Oregon in 2004.  Gary has been working as the Assistant District Fish Biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife at the Charleston Field Office since 2007.  Gary works on fisheries along with the STEP programs in the Tenmile, Coos, and Coquille basins. 

Gary Vonderohe will be talking about the history of the salmon population in the Coos Basin. This will include the history of some of the first salmon hatcheries in the Coos Basin, including the Morgan Creek and Noble Creek STEP hatcheries. Gary will also explain what exactly the Salmon Trout Enhancement Program (STEP program) is and how our salmon populations are doing currently.
