Between Two Worlds
Between Two Worlds, by Jon Littlefield (Coos Bay Printing). Paperback
This exploration of the lives of several Chinese families in the Coos Bay region 100 years ago brings to life a forgotten chapter of local history. Chinese sojourners were a substantial presence in Coos County from about 1880 to 1940. Most of them came and went without a trace; but a few put down roots, defied the social and legal restrictions of the time, and became as well-known and as established as other leading citizens of the area. This saga, written in the style of a personal memoir, suggests that some Chinese immigrants experienced less intolerance and discrimination in Coos Bay and North Bend than elsewhere in the country. Their story is amply illuminated with photographs, drawings, and documents from private collections as well as Coos History Museum resources.
