Sire Battle talks the History of Timber on Dirty Freehub

The story of Coos County is deeply tied to timber, and the Coos History Museum recently had the opportunity to share that story with a wider audience.

In an episode of the Dirty Freehub podcast, CHM educator Sire Battle joined the show to talk about how the timber industry shaped Coos Bay and the surrounding region. The conversation explores how towering forests, deep-water ports, and evolving technology helped transform a small coastal settlement into one of the most important timber centers on the West Coast.

For more than a century, timber was the backbone of the local economy. Logging and milling expanded rapidly as lumber from Coos Bay was shipped to growing cities along the Pacific Coast and around the world.

Technological innovations helped drive the industry forward. Tools like steam-powered logging equipment made it possible to harvest timber more efficiently and transport logs from deep within the forests to mills along the bay. By the early twentieth century, large timber companies and investors had established major operations in the region, and Coos Bay became a major center for lumber production and export.

Like many resource-based industries, however, the timber economy eventually faced major changes. Shifts in markets, new environmental protections, and technological changes reduced the number of mills and jobs beginning in the late twentieth century.

In the Dirty Freehub episode, listeners can explore these stories in more depth and learn how the history of timber continues to shape Coos County today.
